What is Your Style?
You will find that different photographers follow different styles and methods. Do not be afraid to ask a potential photographer what their style is. It may be that they can adjust their style for your project but if they are more comfortable getting portraits and you need a shoot with background photos, they may not be a good fit.
What Will You Do Post-Production?
Taking the right photos if half the battle but it’s not all of it. You will also need to know if the photos will be retouched. Will they be color balanced? If so, will these tasks be done before or after you see the proofs? Some photographers will choose the best photos and retouch them, while others will give you all the untouched proofs, let you pick which ones you like, and retouch those. Either way may be fine, but it is important to know what to expect.
How Many Events Like Mine Have You Handled?
The best way to see the range of a particular photographer is to look at their portfolio. If you see photos for an event similar to yours, then you will know they can handle yours. However, if you do not see something similar listed, or you have an unusual event that may be complicated to cover, make sure you discuss their experience.
What is Included in Your Package?
It is likely you will receive quotes from more than one photographer. When you are comparing those quotes, it is essential to know that you are comparing the same things. For example, if one covers prints, albums, proofs, and extra coverage such as red-carpet events beforehand, you would not want to directly compare it to one quote that includes just the photos with prints and everything else costing extra. In short, make sure you are comparing apples to apples.
What is the Deposit and When Are Fees Due?
You do not know any surprises – especially financial surprises. All photographers are going to ask you for a deposit. Make sure you are clear on how much it is, when it is due, and what happens to that deposit if the event is canceled for some reason. Get detailed information on when the remaining fees are due as well.
