1 . Ciclavia

Ciclavia has been a spring and summer staple in Los Angeles since 2008, and it’s still going strong. Originally founded as a grassroots leader in the global open streets movement, Ciclavia is a cycling event where participants cycle through the streets of L.A. en masse from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. On June 11th, participants will begin the trail in Atwater Village and finish on Doran St. in Glendale. Cyclists ride nearly every type of whimsical and unusual bike throughout the streets, as the event has become a major fixture in L.A.’s cycling culture. The streets will be closed to cars and open for cyclists, pedestrians, runners, and skaters to use recreationally. Admission to the event is free.

2 . LA Pride

West Hollywood’s Pride Festival is another summer event with roots in a social movement. The festival originated on June 28th, 1970 by the Christopher Street West Association as one of the mainstays of LGBTQ culture in Los Angeles. As the epicenter of LGBTQ culture and influence, West Hollywood is by far the most popular and well-known pride fair in Los Angeles. Complete with theme park rides and attractions, the event will take place in West Hollywood Park and feature a variety of new vendors, live musical performances, dancing, fresh food, and celebration. Admission begins at $20 and will rise closer to the event date.

3 . Grand Park’s 4th of July Block Party

For Independence Day, Grand Park’s 4th of July Block Party is a favorite among Downtown Los Angeles locals. With picnics, live music, dancing, games, and art-making for all ages, the event is replete with festivities ideal for making family memories. The Block Party will have two musical stages with DJs throughout the day playing everything from 70’s funk and soul to Top 40. Live musical performances during the evening include a variety of artists and a pops orchestra. The event will feature over 30 vendors and gourmet food trucks serving fresh fare throughout the entire event. Fireworks begin at 8:30 pm at the top of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and will be visible throughout DTLA and the surrounding districts. Admission to Grand Park’s Block Party is free.

4 . Hollywood Bowl’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular

If you’re interested in more of a sit-down celebration for Independence Day, the Hollywood Bowl’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular with Pentatonix is a must. The three time, Grammy-winning a capella group will be accompanied by the Hollywood Bowl orchestra. In addition to the group’s hits like “Hallelujah” and “Daft Punk,” the night will also be filled with patriotic arrangements. Since the venue is set outdoors, guests are welcome to bring their own picnic, although food is also sold on premises. Admission is half off for children 12 years old and under.

5 . Beach Front Cinema

Beach Front Cinema’s outdoor movie screenings are ideal for those wanting to engage in nostalgic pastimes reminiscent of the 1950’s. The event is located in Huntington State Beach and features the largest inflatable outdoor movie screen in California. Although some patrons choose to bring their own low back chairs, plush seating and jumbo beanbags are provided by the cinema. Movies playing during the summer feature older classics like “Jaws” as well as more recent favorites like “The Notebook.” However, there is more to the event than just the movie screening: vendors, live bands, contests, and games for all ages are also available.

6 . Shakespeare By the Sea

For those looking to take in some high culture over the summer, Shakespeare By the Sea stages outdoor performances of The Bard’s most famous works on beachfront settings. Each performance, however, occurs in a different coastal neighborhood such as Ranchos Palos Verdes, Hermosa Beach, or Santa Ana. Although the company has performances throughout the year, spring and summer are the most popular seasons. This year, the troupe will be performing “The Taming of the Shrew” and “Macbeth” during its spring and summer seasons.
